North Atlantic pearls

On this tour, you will experience the best of both Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Discover for yourself the same world that the Vikings found as they sailed the North Atlantic Ocean. If you yearn for adventure and to see a fantastic nature so amazing that you must experience it first hand in order to believe it – then you are sure to come home full of fresh air and with a mass of tales to tell about the North Atlantic neighbours.

Itinerary: Individual tour 

THURSDAY: Arrival in Iceland.
Depart from Copenhagen with Icelandair on a direct flight to Iceland. After a three-hour flight you will land at the international airport of Keflavík, situated approximately one-hour’s drive from Reykjavík.

After check in, take a walk around Reykjavík, which is home to the majority of Iceland’s inhabitants and the cultural centre of the country. Although the town is spread out with fast growing suburbs, the centre is a small area characterised by colourful houses, good shops and restaurants.

Spend the night in Reykjavík.

FRIDAY: Experience Geysir, Gullfoss and Thingvellir National Park.
Look forward to an exciting day and discover some of Iceland’s biggest attractions. The tour starts with a pickup from your hotel.

You visit Thingvellir National Park where the Icelandic parliament Altinget was established in 930. This is also the place where the tectonic plates between Europe and America meet and divide. Next on the itinerary is a visit to the magnificent waterfall Gullfoss, Geysir and Strokkur, a geothermal area full of hot springs and bubbling pools of mud.

Spend the night in Reykjavík.

SATURDAY: A day on your own to explore the vibrant capital of Reykjavík.
Time to investigate the shopping street Laugavegur, where you will find many exciting shops. Make time to see the Hallgrímskirkja, which was inspired by Iceland’s volcanic rock formations and is visible from almost everywhere in the town, the top of the tower gives the best view in town.

Harpa, the new concert hall, is situated on the waterfront and was inspired by the northern lights and the dramatic Icelandic nature. In the evening, the building is a large luminous sculpture.

If there is time, then head to the old harbour where you will find the flea-market Kolaportid, for vintage clothes, vinyl records, the usual bric-a-brac and last but not least, some Icelandic delicacies. If you fancy a good cup of coffee then go to Kaffibarrin.

It is possible to purchase additional excursions such as:

  • Whale safari: You can expect to see Minke Whales, Harbour Porpoises, White-beaked Dolphins and Humpback Whales.
  • Visit the Blue Lagoon: Now you can relax and enjoy the warm water, which is salty and rich in minerals.
  • Riding an Icelandic horse: You will be riding on easy bridleways through brush hills and mossy lava fields. Take a moment to note the many different formations created over the centuries.

Spend the night in Reykjavík.

SUNDAY: Iceland’s beautiful south coast with waterfalls and Jokulsárlón. 
Another exciting full day excursion, starting with a pick up from your hotel. You will drive along the south coast with the Atlantic Ocean on one side, green farmland, mountains and glaciers on the other. Discover natural treasures such as, the iconic waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, Skaftafell National Park, Vatnajokull glacier and see floating icebergs and other large blocks of ice. This ice comes from the Vatnajokull glacier and flows continuously out into the cold lagoon on its way to the sea. Time to reflect about the amazing events of the day as you return to Reykjavík.

MONDAY: Arrive Faroe Islands.
Check out of accommodation and depart with Atlantic Airways to the Faroe Islands. After a one and a half hour flight, you will land at Vágar airport, which is approximately one-hour’s drive from Tórshavn.

After check in, there is time for a walk through the old part of Tórshavn. As you wander, you will discover a maze of lanes and alleys, steps and protruding rocks and small-tarred houses with white windows and grass roofs. It is a unique place, not just in the Faroes but also in the entire world. Remember to respect the privacy of the people living in the old houses.

There are many restaurants and cafés in Tórshavn where you can try the excellent local fish and meat.

Spend the night in Tórshavn.

TUESDAY: Discover colourful villages, memorable views and a chance to meet the locals.
An exciting day to the scenic northern part of Eysturoy, to experience some of the Faroes biggest attractions. Starting with a pick up from your hotel, you will drive from Tórshavn over the pretty mountain road called Oyggjarvegur to the mountain pass Norðadalsskarð, to see the nearby islands of Koltur and Hestur.

The drive continues through pretty landscape and tiny colourful villages to the only bridge that crosses the Atlantic, connecting the islands of Streymoy and Eysturoy. From here, you will drive on to Gjógv, known for its distinctive natural harbour and Crown Princess Mary’s Bench. You will also have the chance to see the characteristic rock formations Risin and Kellingin and Slættaratindur (882m), the highest mountain in the country. 

Spend the night in Tórshavn.

WEDNESDAY: A day on your own in the charming capital of Tórshavn. 
It is time to explore Tórshavn. At the far end of the marina is the shop Østrøm where you can look at and maybe even buy, some of the modern Faroese art and handicrafts. Other interesting shops to visit in the city center are Tutl that sells Faroese music and Guðrun & Guðrun who sell knitwear in the latest Faroese fashion. Marjun Heimá that has specialised in producing the Faroese national costume, you can see a very nice display of these in the shop. On the walk around town, you will pass by the quaint old bookshop, which is definitely worth a visit.

It is also possible to visit the Art Museum that has a wide range of Faroese art, showing how nature and the landscape has been the dominant motif throughout the entire history of Faroese art. The Nordic House is not far away and is an artwork in itself.

Spend the night in Tórshavn.

THURSDAY: Arrive Denmark.
Check out of hotel and if you have time, we suggest a visit to the supermarket Miklagarður in the SMS shopping centre. Here you will find a wide range of Faroese specialities such as vacuum-packed salmon and salt fish etc.

You can buy Faroese beer in the Tax Free shop at the airport. Depart with Atlantic Airways to Copenhagen.
